Last Sunday everyone finally got what they were waiting on. And truly What A Time it is To Be Alive. Drizzy and Future probably the two hottest rappers, Na scratch that, the two hottest artist of 2015, finally gave us their joint mixtape. And I can't even lie... It's good... But that's it. I guess I was just expecting a little more since it was Drake and Future, but I'm in no way saying this was a bad tape. This tape had hella bangers, and EVERY song on here is playable. But what defines greatness in an album, or atleast to me, is the longevity, or how long you'll be listening to it, and I won't even lie, a few of these songs in about two months won't get a play from me, aside from the occasional time it pops up on my shuffle.
WATTBA was executively produced by Metro Boomin' and he did an excellent job on it. Probably the hottest producer out right now laid his signature style all over this tape. His deep hitting but mellow trap beats are very apparent and crafted especially for Future on here. That's why I feel like this sounds more as a Future featuring Drake mixtape.
What was dope about this mixtape ? The beats were nice of course, and again was produced excellently. This tape was also full of many quoteable lyrics. Lyrics I'm gonna see all over Twitter and IG for awhile . Drake and Future also opened up the tape strong with one of the hardest songs on there, Digital Dash. Future gave one of his hardest verses on here, followed by an even harder verse by Drake.
Standout Tracks? Like I said previously Digital Dash, but also Big Rings, Diamonds Dancing, Plastic Bag, Change Locations, and I'm The Plug, and the best track on there, 30 For 30 Freestyle ( which I'll be addressing separately)
Big Rings was the club banger of WATTBA, and I think Future took a shot at Meek Mill on there too.
Diamonds Dancing was one of my favs on here because of how smooth this joint was. Future and Drake singing over a slow, trap beat was beautiful. Can we ask for anything more?
If Y'all looking for a typical Drake sighting, he pops up on Plastic Blag, one of my personal favorites. Drake on this beat crooning about throwing money at the strip club. "Roll up with the bands on me, this a good night to dance on me, this a good night to dance on me" Does It get anymore Drake?
Now to me the best Drake AND Future song on here is Change Locations. Future and Drake share chorus duties on here. Future first " 60 naked bitches no exaggeration, we bought all the bottles, had to change locations " then Drake follows up " me and friends, we got money to spend, me and friends we got money to spend" This was the kind of collaborating I expected from the a Future and Drake tape. Then they didn't stop at the Chorus, they continued to eat with they respective verses. Definetly the must listen on the mixtape.
Now, I said I'd get back to the 30 For 30 Freestyle. I kind of count this as a bonus track kind of , because it's the only song on here Drake is on it by himself . And lemme tell you. He kilt this shit. By far the best song on this entire album. 40 blesses Drake with his typical beat, the slow, piano keys filled rhythm that just makes you think about life... And you can tell that's exactly what Drake was doing . Drake addresses the hate he receives from the rap game, the cop killings, his Meek Mill Beef, some delicious scallops he obviously enjoyed, and so much more. So many quoteable bars on here "paternity testing for women I've never slept with, I'm legally obligated if they request it" " use to give no reaction , but now I'm overreacting, awe man, this shit gotta go platinum" and hey, he even dropped some bars in Spanish .
Dissapoinments ? JUMPMAN. That's probably the most boosted, overrated song on there . Just something for yall basic Atlanta boys to dab to. I swear anything that has a Jordan reference automatically becomes lit. Na I ain't going.
WATTBA was again a good Mixtape. The fact it was made in 6 days( and sounds like it) we could possibly call it great mixtape . Drake dropped it to hold us down till Views comes, which I'm assuming will be here January, since it didn't drop this week like everyone was thinking . Drizzy and Future both secured their 2nd #1 albums of this year with this tape also. Drake and Future definitely got chemistry and hopefully we get a WATTBA 2 or something in that nature . And one last thing I want to address... STOP COMPARING THIS TO WATCH THE THRONE . It is in no way comparable. Watch The Throne was in a whole 'nother class, but I'll leave it at that .
